Some people get it…

When this photo first surfaced on Facebook, I was moved by the human capacity for kindness and generosity. People never seem to have a problem coming together to help one another in the face of adversity. We saw the nobility of the human spirit after Katrina, after the tsunami that ravaged Japan, and any other disaster in recent history.

My question is, how many people are like this all the time?

Face it: if people had hung power strips over their gate with an invitation to charge your phone on an ordinary day, most of us would think it’s pretty weird. But what else can we do on a daily basis to be kind and generous to each other?

I had the privilege of seeing Avery Brooks (Capt. Benjamin Sisko) at Star Trek Las Vegas in 2010. During his Q&A, a fan had asked Mr. Brooks, in the context of the space program, what he thought we needed to do in order to make Gene Roddenberry’s dream become a reality.

Mr. Brooks was nothing short of brilliant. He informed the audience that Gene’s dream isn’t going to come true through technology. He said we’re going to get there by treating each other with kindness, respect, and dignity. That, he said, was Gene’s dream. Look for opportunities to help. Don’t wait for a disaster. Do it every day.

Avery Brooks gets it.

Do you?
